About Duane

Fifteen years in addiction treatment. Ten as a mental health therapist. And nearly thirty years running restaurants before I did any of this, which turns out to have been better preparation than it sounds.

How I got here

This is my second career.

I owned restaurants for nearly thirty years. When I sold the businesses I needed to reinvent myself, and I chose to do addiction counseling first. What I found was that so many of the issues and addictions were rooted in mental health, so I went and trained for that as well.

Thirty years of staff, suppliers, long nights and people at the end of their patience teaches you a fair amount about what human beings do with stress and frustration, and I did not learn any of it from a textbook. I also spent twelve years on a school board, which teaches you something different: how to sit in a room with people who disagree with you and still get somewhere.

Then there were ten years working with three county drug courts. Most of the people I sat with in that stretch had not chosen to be there, and a fair few had no interest in being helped by me specifically. That is where I learned to be useful to someone before they are convinced, which is probably the single most useful thing I know how to do.

These days I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, working with adults across Minnesota by video. Holding both licences matters more than it sounds like it should. The drinking and the depression are usually the same conversation, and being sent to two providers who never speak to each other means telling the whole story twice.

If you do what is right for you and your values, it will be right for those close to you.

In the room

What I am actually like to sit with.

Warm and conversational, and it can feel casual. I do not like to dance around issues and problems. I would rather name them. I am compassionate, and I will work to motivate you rather than push you, but after a while of working together I will get more challenging if I think you are stuck.

I have a relaxed demeanour and I do laugh in session. I have a sense of humour and I use it when it fits. None of that is at your expense, and none of it means I am not taking the thing seriously.

The work itself draws on CBT, ACT, solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing and mindfulness. Underneath all of it I am person-centred, which in plain terms means we are working on what you want rather than on a curriculum I brought with me.

Most people who come to me are afraid of the same thing: being vulnerable and honest and then ending up feeling more shame than they started with. That fear is reasonable and I take it seriously. Change is also a genuinely uncomfortable idea, because you will be asked to do things that are not comfortable. I am not going to pretend otherwise.

What I believe

Four things I say often enough to mean.

01

“We repeat what we don’t repair.”

Patterns do not get bored and wander off. Whatever did not get dealt with tends to come back around wearing a different coat, in a different relationship or a different job, and it will keep doing that until somebody looks at it directly.

02

“Clear is kind.”

Being vague with someone to keep the room comfortable is not a kindness, it is a postponement. I would rather tell you what I actually think, including when what I think is that I am not the right person for this.

03

“If you do not feel uncomfortable you are not changing.”

The discomfort is not a sign something has gone wrong. It is usually the only reliable sign that anything is moving at all. The magic you are looking for is generally in the work you have been avoiding.

04

“I want you to learn to be loyal to yourself.”

To be your own best friend, in the way you already are for other people. A lot of the people I work with have spent so long taking care of everyone else that their own needs stopped registering as real. That is the thing we end up working on, whatever they came in for.

One step

That is me. The next part is about you.

If any of that sounded like someone you could talk to, tell me a bit about what has been going on. If it did not, that is genuinely useful information too, and I would still rather point you toward the right person than have you keep looking on your own.
